About Us

James and Kybor share a passion for fun, inventive and colourful stories. We love to explore them from more than one angle and draw on our childhood experiences and from the world around us.

The Writer

James Williams is a writer and theatre director, and is the Associate Director at Watford Palace Theatre where he develops stories with children and adults of all ages and directs shows for family audiences.  His work with children and young people recently featured in a performance at the Royal Opera House’s The Thriving Child conference and at a United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child expert meeting in London. He is currently directing the Watford Palace Theatre pantomime Sleeping Beauty.  His writing for the stage includes an adaptation of Treasure Island, and two one act plays for young people: #Houseparty and Trolls.

James loves going to the theatre, is a big fan of monster movies, and longs to go on more holidays and adventures.  He is also a bit of a monster when it comes to chocolate!

The Illustrator

Kybor Carlsen trained at Wimbledon College of Art gaining an Honours Degree in Fine Art: Print and Digital Media. He works part-time at the University of the Arts London, with a technical background in visual communication design, illustration and painting. He combines drawing with new technologies, bringing together the handmade and the digital.

Kybor loves to spend time in nature and pottering about in his garden, when he is not too busy escaping into new worlds through books, films and paintings. He creates colourful characters drawn from his imagination and from the natural world.  The wondrous array of strange creatures found in our seas were a big inspiration for Mulligan’s monsters.

Our Inspiration

The idea for our first picture book came from a conversation about how similar our anxieties and bedtime rituals were as children.  We also wanted to explore the challenges faced by our monsters and imagined what the story would look like from their viewpoint.

We love great stories and illustrations and Quentin Blake and Roald Dahl are definite heroes of ours!  In fact, one of our first projects together was a poster design for James and the Giant Peach! Here is Kybor’s artwork.

“A little magic can take you a long way.” Roald Dahl.
